Our Chosen Festival and Theme

So after researching into the other festivals, we've decided to run with the New York Photofestival. I really like the urban setting for this festival. Holding the shows in the industrial spaces is something that is appealing to me in my personal view and I feel the work we're all aiming to exhibit would sit perfect within those spaces.

Our theme will be: Economy.

I think the openness to this theme will give us with enough areas to cover without us creating final pieces of work that are too similar. We all know where we want to head with our final outcomes so now it's just up to us to get out there and start creating some initial shots to take into our feedback sessions and then working from there.

Scotiabank Photo Festival

The theme at CONTACT 2013 is 'Field of Vision'

Official website overview: 'This year's CONTACT Festival will highlight how photography extends sight to extract meaning from the world around us, from traditional documentary practices that maintain a photographic “truth”, to experimental approaches to image making that challenge the way we see—the camera’s field of view extends the eye’s field of vision.'

I like the concept of this festival and how we use the camera as an extension of our view. I'm not so sure I would of enjoyed trying to create this as a body of work though.

New York Photo Festival

New York International Photo Festival

The theme at NYPH in 2013 is 'Devastation, Document, Drive'

The basis of this theme was born from hurricane Sandy that hit the east coast of America in October 2012.

The website overview is 'All photographers––professional, student, amateur, beginner, camera-phone users, hobbyists, and civilians––are welcome to submit their photographs of this cataclysmic event––the superstorm’s wrath, the incredible devastation, the struggle to restore and rebuild––as well as analogous instances elsewhere in this age of imperious weather and its contemporary causes.'

I think this theme is something that would be quite hard for us to create as it's something which is based around a natural disaster, something which we don't generally have in the UK, well apart from the 5mm of snow that falls and grinds the country to a halt!

Noorderlicht Festival

Noorderlicht International Photography Festival

The theme of this festival for 2013 is 'TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT'

The overview on their website is:

'Can the roots of our current economic and financial crisis be made tangible through photography? The Noorderlicht International Photofestival 2013 aims to peer into what has caused our current state of affairs, particularly into the so-called “1%” and its financial and political power at the expense of the “99%”. For this challenging theme, Noorderlicht calls upon the photographic community to help us build an inspired, profound and heartfelt exhibition.

The Sequel - Dutch photographers only

A second theme has been announced - open to Dutch photographers only - which loosely translates as 'The Sequel'. Seven Dutch photographers have been selected and commissioned to return to a previously photographed subject of their own, and by making new work based on the old, to follow up, deepen and re-examine.'

I think this festival is something we should look into a little bit more as the theme is something that could be translated by way of photography is such a wide way.

An Introduction...

For this brief we've been asked to do some research into current international photography festivals. Upon doing so we need to the come up with a theme within our group, one that we can hold at our own mock 'exhibition'.

Once we've agreed on a theme that we're all happy with, we each then need to choose one established/upcoming photographer who has produced a body of work that we could exhibit at our show.
After we have each decided on our photographers, we then need to write a 500 word critical evaluation of the body of work produced by said photographer.

Having got our 'main act', we can then go on to each produce our own body of work to run along side the photographers work at the exhibition.
When we have created our own images, we will then go on to write another 500 word critique on our own work...

Confused? Welcome aboard...
